Growing your own gourds is the best way to get lots of gourds for a good price but finding seeds is not always easy especially for some of the rarer gourd varieties.

After you get you grow your first batch of gourds you can save the seeds to grow the next year. Saving your own seeds is easy and allows you to grow gourds year after year for free.

There are tons of varieties of hard-shelled gourds available. Below is a list of some of my favourites gourd varieties from some of my favourite suppliers.

Birdhouse Gourds

The most recognizable of the hard-shelled gourds, the birdhouse gourd is, as the name implies, the perfect size for a birdhouse. It grows to about 14 inches tall by 12 inches wide. Besides birdhouses, these gourds are great to make bowls, canteens, and a wide range of art and crafts.

Snake Gourds

Snake gourds are long thin gourds that are often used for fun gourd crafts or interesting home decor. They can be trained as they are growing to be twisted or knotted making them great fun for playful gardeners

Dinosaur Gourd

These gourds have great bumpy skin that makes them a fun gourd to grow for any gourd enthusiasts. They grow to about 20 inches tall by 8 inches wide and make fun crafts or unique art and can be used as they are in home and garden decor.

Spinning Gourds

These small gourds grow to only 2 to 5 inches tall. They are great for kids and crafters. They make a fun ornament, toy, or instrument.

Apple Gourd

Apple gourds are shaped like huge red delicious apples measuring about 7 inches tall by 4 inches wide. They tend to have a flat bottom. Their unique shape makes them great for many projects including a small birdhouse, bowls, and many arts and crafts.

Zucca Gourds

Zucca gourds are huge gourds growing up to 36 inches long. They make great drums, vases, flowerpots, or conversation pieces. Great fun to grow because of their impressive size.

Canteen Gourds

Canteen gourds are short and fat round gourds. They have a flat bottom and wide diameter. The unique shape makes them great for bowls and lidded boxes. Many gourd artists even make purses out of them.
